Global Ocean Circulation

Global Ocean Circulation

We study and model the ocean circulation and investigate (I) the geophysical processes that sustain it and (II) the role that it plays in the climate system.

Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Some GFD topics of our interest are: large scale closure of the meridional overturning circulation, Internal waves, boundary layer turbulence, mesoscale jets and eddies, submesoscale dynamics, small scale mixing.

Global Carbon Cycle

Global Carbon Cycle

We study the intertwined biochemical-dynamical processes within the context of the global carbon cycle.

Polar Climate Stability

Polar Climate Stability

We study the stability of Antarctic and Arctic climates as well as their interconnection through the deep branches of the ocean meridional circulation.

Global Heat Budget

Global Heat Budget

We study the global heat budget current focus on: (I) role of small scale mixing in heat exchange between the atmosphere and the upper ocean, and between the upper ocean and the deep ocean, and (II) role of diapycnal mixing within the Atlantic Meridional Circulation (AMOC) on the meridional inter-hemispheric heat transport.

Coastal Ecosystems

Coastal Ecosystems

We study the role of the blue carbon ecosystems in carbon capture and sequestration, as well as in protection against flooding.

Marine Ecosystems and Climate Change

Marine Ecosystems and Climate Change

We study the impact of climate change on fish populations and the feedback of such changes, mediated through influencing the primary productivity, on to the climate system. (Figure from Bianchi et al. 2021)
